Meet The Boss: Club To Club Festival

In the lead up to this years festival in Turin, we caught up with festival boss Sergio Ricciardone to see what makes him tick

#C2C15 is the 15th edition of Club To Club, the leading Italian Festival of music and arts in Turin, Italy. It runs from 4th to 8th November with Jamie XX, Todd Terje, Floating Points, Thom Yorke and Four Tet amongst it's lineup. It's a five day affair during Contemporary Arts Week with round-the-clock shows of some of the most acclaimed artists, they'll be taking over some unique venues of Italy’s most elegant and regal city. So who better to ask some questions to that the festival's director - Sergio Ricciardone.

1. What’s your name and what do you do?

I'm Sergio Ricciardone, founder and artistic director of Club To Club Festival and president of cultural enterprise Xplosiva.

2. Where are you from?

I was born and am currently based in Turin, Italy.

3. What does your company do?

In addition to Club To Club, leading Italian festival of music & arts seeking the perfect balance between avant-garde and pop, Xplosiva devises projects and collaborates with both brands and cultural institutions, maximizing relationships amongst different languages and styles.

4. How did the festival get started?

In the late '90s, Xplosiva was a weekly clubnight that attracted electronic music fans from all over Italy. The transition to cultural association (and then to cultural enterprise) and the subsequent birth of the festival as a one-night club circuit spread over city venues represent the natural evolution of our vision and of the relationship established with Turin.

5. Are there any entrepreneurs that you look up to, or is there a particular thing that inspired Club To Club?

Juventus FC and their current board are always a big source of inspiration to me for the way they managed to value an Italian brand nationally and internationally.

6. In your own opinion, how successful is the festival in terms of your original dream?

It has grown to become more successful than I could possibly envision at the time, though ambition and vision have grown together with it.
We want to make its growth possible by embracing new audiences while keeping the original spirit and scope intact.

 7. What is your average working day like?

A never-ending succession of meetings, emails and phone calls combined with heavy planning and passionate music debates with my team.

8. What are your goals for the future?

To make Xplosiva and Club To Club bigger, stronger and more internationally acknowledged.

9. Any examples of a time you ignored the advice/opinions of others and went your own way?

In 2010, the festival lineup went through important changes, giving up most djs to feature acts like Four Tet, Caribou, Jamie xx which were then relatively small on the Italian scene. Everyone told us we would've failed but it was a major success, gaining our fans' trust and paving the way to the uncompromising lineup we have today.

10. What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome so far?

One of the biggest ongoing challenges we face everyday is the state of the Italian music market, which is definitely not the easiest to work in.

11. Any funny stories?

Sometimes I pretend to sell tickets in the middle of the street to see how people react.

12. What advice do you have for someone considering starting a business or festival?

Build your ideas on solid ground, focus on your goal and stay true to yourself.
