Unabombers Mar 13, 2008

Our latest podcast comes from top class double act, The Unabombers. They rocked our 12Sundays event back at the beginning of February, and we managed to sneak some badgers with microphones strapped on to capture the whole of their set, a massive 3 hours! Also, we caught up for them for 12 Questions, cunningly tied in with 12Sundays you'll notice! Enjoy :)

BT - 3 things you love about Manchester?

UB - rain, music, late night after hour illegal parties

BT - How did you get started in house music? What clubs/people/labels/radio shows were influential for you?

UB – I got into house music in Sheffield via Winston and Parrot the UKs earliest pioneers of house music, so was listening to tracks like Adonis, Virgo and Larry Heard and remember this was a time when the whole of London refused to play this music. Whilst cities like Sheffield and Manchester were listening to the new sound of Chicago.

BT - Can you remember your first gig? Where was it? How old were you?

UB – In a bar in Manchester called 10bar, I was in my 20's

BT - What was the funniest moment you have had whilst DJing?

UB - Large men raving in pink boots at a festival, you had to be there.

BT – Name one album/song that everyone should hear.

UB –Mr Fingers: "Children at Play" A seminal record that will always sound mindblowing and a real hidden gem.

BT - What do you think of the current scene? How do you feel it has changed over the course of Electric Chairs run?

UB – On the one hand commercialism and greed came into the scene and created a new ethos of Tesco clubbing: booking all the big names in these Super Clubs but with no soul or Passion. These bums on seats promoters took the original spirit and rinsed it. But at the same time the antithesis of this greed meant that underground nights and a back to basics attitude developed with people putting on parties because they love the music, not for the dollar. So, ultimately its been a contradictory time. Seek and ye shall find!

BT - Now that Electric Chair has finished and the Elektrons are really starting to take off, what plans have you for the near future?

UB – The ending of Electric Chair was obviously a sad moment but I can honestly say I've never been so excited at the same time. We'll be doing more parties, more one off events as well as our Electric Elephant festival in Croatia and so many more exciting things in the pipe line. Its not about being the next Ikea, its about trying to be exciting and maintaining the original philosophy. Without change you stagnate and become a self parody. Trying to push the music forward and take risks has to be central to all of this.

BT - Any plans for EC compilations? or this that finished too?

UB – We are on it, we're grafting and its coming out very soon!

BT - Whats been your favourite non EC gig in recent memory? Any particular standout ones?

UB – Croatia festival 07 where we are returning this year to host our Electric Elephant festival. It was like nothing I've ever seen or done before. It was like acid house all over again but in the sunshine and its happening right now. DJing on a boat to the finest 300 disco ASBOs across Europe was mindblowing, from cosmic to rock to house, techno, dub, jazz and even fucking ELO, everyone was digging everything. It was a very spiritual experience and I know it sounds really wank to talk in such a grandiose way but that's how it was. It wasn't just loads of old disco dads and train spotters but every tribal grouping imaginable.

BT - If you weren't involved in the music industry, what do you think you would have ended up doing?

UB – Scratching a living, listening to music, sat in front of my woodburning stove. I've never been interested in careerism to be honest.

BT - Your favourite tea?

UB – Yorkshire tea. Full stop. Period. Nothing compares.

BT - Ever had dinner in Billy Scurry's restaurant 'Gruel'?

UB – Yes, I have actually. Quite a few years ago when he first started. This man is a legend and if he had been born in London he'd probably be regarded as the new Baldelli, it's a travesty this man hasn't got more attention. One of the finest DJs. In fact we've invited him to play at the Electric Elephant festival.
