bodytonic :: Trus'me
The latest Bodytonic Podcast comes from Manchester’s golden boy, David Wolstencroft a.k.a. Trus'me. It’s almost a year now since “Narda” was released on the US label Stilllove4music but the impact of that one 12” was huge. The follow up “W.A.R.” was equally tasty and signalled that this fella is no one hit wonder. Now his debut LP “Working Nights” is causing a huge stir locally and internationally and shows that Trus'me is a force to be reckoned with.
Trus'me will play Stereotonic and Scribble on the 7th of March, but right now he brings us an exclusive Prime Numbers mix taking in disco, funk, jazz, deep house and a little techno. Bodytonic’s Michael Black caught up with David between his busy studio schedule for the usual Podcast banter.
Where does your name “Trus'me” come from? It's all a bit of fun really, its said quite often in the UK in the Hip Hop community. I'm kinda asking you to believe in me, only time will tell if that comes true.
Do you come from a musical background? I learned a few instruments when I was younger, but in general no. My family and old friends just weren't into music to be honest. I found music on my own quite late in fact, it kinda depress me all those years wasted on educating myself. Funny when you look through some of your first buys and you see producers and musicians on there that you know so vividly now.
Who/what would you say has influenced you most musically? Such a hard question as one artist can put you onto another, the DJ's in Manchester and hedz to a friend of a friends salsa collection. It’s a trip through music lane, I'm still learning and those who say they’re not must have one serious record collection.
In a sentence, how would you describe your new album “Working Nights”? A big slice of me, although there is a lot more to come. I would like to think people feel they have been taken through a journey of music.
What would you say is the common thread throughout the album? Sounds that make you feel good! I tried to express it all in this LP, something for everyone as they say.
Are you completely happy with it or do you listen back and think about tweaking bits, is it difficult to let go? If you asked me before the release I would have said yes. Although 'it is, what it is' as someone once said, I just put it down and that’s what comes out.
From your studio pics it looks like you’re a bit of a traditionalist production wise. What’s your take on the whole software approach to making music? It’s what you do with it, how you use it. Anoligital I like to say, embrace the future but don't forget the past that’s where the love first came from.
What other genres do you find interesting?
I love all music, (not country) if it makes you have that feeling we all have when we listen to music, then genres are meaningless.
What are your main ingredients for a good nights clubbing? It’s the equilibrium, to keep the heads happy, the girls dancing & the boys will follow. Let the oldies reminisce and keep the newbies inspired. Once a DJ realizes this they suddenly become noticed.
Which do you prefer most DJ-ing or producing? Its tea and cake, I can't have one without the other. Expressing your own sounds with others you love is something not too many people get to experience. How can a producer know how to rock a crowd unless he sees the reaction at first hand and how can a DJ really connect with an audience without telling it through their own voice.
What is the ethos for your new label “Prime Numbers”? It’s a base for me, a way to present it my way. Secondly it’s a platform to help forgotten greats like Reggie Dokes to new masters like Linkwood express themselves. I have so much great content to put out that I'm impatient to wait release by release. It gives you access to upfront material to keep your sets fresh and interesting, at the same time promoting your own sound through the label. You will see most cuts that make the 12" will have a Trus'Me mentality to the sound. PN02 is out 11th of Feb and mp3 now with exclusive cuts on Traxsource.
What is your top 10 chart at the moment? I'm not really a guy who buys too much new music for obvious reasons, but here are 10 records that I just found in my bag.
- Chez N Trent - Prescription Underground (Prescription)
- Linkwood - Minni (Prime Numbers)
- Osunlade - Touched My Soul (Set)
- Taj Mahal - Why Did You Have To Desert Me? (Columbia)
- Os Devaneios - Embalo Diferentie (EMI)
- Brick - Fun (Bang Records)
- Ashford & Simpson - Don`t Cost You Nothing (Warner Bros)
- Crooklyn Dodgers `95 - Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers (MCA)
- Brentfold All Stars - Greedy G (TRUS`ME EDIT)
- Lou Donaldson - You're Welcome, Stop On By (Blue Note)
What are your plans for the future, production wise? 2nd LP is on its way, this is a real leap forward for me. Amp fiddler, Paul Randolph & Piranhahead all feature on the LP. Also working on plenty of remixes across the board, plus a few secret identities to unleash other forms of production in 2008
