Diesler Dec 5, 2007

Stee Downes interviews Diesler about his new album ‘The Rhythm Station’ and the future.

The 3rd Diesler album, entitled "The Rhythm Station", was released on Freestyle Records in October 2007. It features 11 new songs with the talents of previous Diesler collaberators Laura Vane & Double Yellow as well as new friends Katie Miller, Afrika Fuentes, testament, Paranormal & Kinny to name but a few.

Diesler & Stan knock out a bumper 1 hour edition of the podcast like a cracker full of a party hats, crap jokes, and northern charm/crap jokes. A sort of round up of the year and a little look at things in 2008. Festive Greetings y'all!!

Where does your name Diesler comes from?

A German footballer, a strong and powerful player.

How did you hook up with Tru-thoughts in the beginning?

Sent a cd down to the label in the summer of 2002, and got a call about them using ‘Cotton Wool’ on their next compilation. From there it developed to an EP and then an Album and so on..

Where did your musical education begin and what was the biggest factor in establishing your sound?

The Radio, late night Radio. From ‘one in the Jungle’ on Radio 1 to Mark Radcliffe. From there I found house music. One night when I was about 16 I heard a mix from Louis Vega from Masters at Work where one hour of the mix was latin infused house and the other hour was his influences. Opened me up to the latin and funk thing and from there I found other DJ’s like David Holmes and Andy Votel.

What type of set-up do you use for your productions?

Just a basic PC and Sequencing set-up. I build my songs using a mixture of samples and live recordings I do round my friends house. All very low budget.

Besides Tru-thoughts and Freestyle records, what labels are you really feeling at the moment?

Sonar Kollektiv are always on top of the labels for me. Deep, progressive and air tight quality. UK wise ‘First Word’ from Leeds are the label to really raise their game the most in the last year, some amazing releases.

Describe the vibe and set-up with your live band?

8 people feature in it, myself on Bongo’s in the engine room with Bass and drums. We also have guitar, keys, Sax and Trombone. Katie Miller is our front woman.

In a sentence, how would you describe your new album ‘The Rhythm Station’. Is there a particular concept behind the title?

It is to reference the beginning of a new journey, or the end of one.

How long have you spent working on this album and how does it differ from your previous one’s?

This album is a lot more focused towards songs than the earlier ones. There is the odd tune for the club but I wanted to create a solid narrative to a record. A beginning, a middleand an end. This record took about 14 months to make and involved a lot of late nights, bags of cookies and cups of tea. Occasionally some recording too.

Describe the vibe and elements of what goes on at your monthly residency “Django’s Riff” in Liverpool?

Its always a great session down there. We don’t play on a stage so we are right in the crowd. We have a good following in that city and starting to see a regular crowd each month. The last one, we went on around 1am on a Thursday night to a capacity venue and rocked it..great times.

What is your top 10 chart at the moment?

1/V/A: Two Syllables (First Word) 2/Aldo Vanucci : Naive (Good Living) 3/V/A : Plantet Latino (Freestyle) 4/Diesler : Revelations Jazzinvaders Remix 5/No Fakin' : Rumpshaker (CDR) 6/Zed Bias ft MDCL : Cottonmouth (Sick Trumpet) 7/QSO : Panama City (Tru Thoughts) 8/Lanu : Don't Sleep Maddslinky Remix 9/Flow Dynamics : Bossa For Bebo Diesler Remix 10/Hint : Keep Your Shirt On (Tru Thoughts)

What can we expect in terms of future projects etc?

Just come out of the studio with the boys in my band , working on their album 6ix Toys, still in mid production. Begun work on a Hip Hop project with the No Fakin DJ crew from Liverpool. Pre Production has begun a possible album with Katie Miller who is the lead singer in my live band. Also a compilation of the the best Diesler remixes from the last 4 years is due out April/May 2008 for release on Freestyle records.
