The New Face(s) of Bonde Do Role

On the eve before their third Dublin show last November, nutty Brazilian Baile Funkers Bonde Do Role announced that they were splitting and would be cutting short the rest of their European tour as a result. The reasons for their split weren’t made too clear to the general public. Most presumed that the strains & stresses of touring had finally taken their toll and lead the trio to loggerheads with each other, and that after a short break from each other they would finally settle their differences and get back to entertaining crowds world wide with their wild indie-kid meets Rio ghetto shows. It would have seemed like the sensible thing to do seeing as the band were still in their youth and really starting to gather a strong fan base for themselves, and with their Domino album “With Lasers” having only been released last summer.

Nonetheless our presumptions were wrong, Marina departed from the group for good in December and is now pursuing a solo career. Determined to keep Bonde alive, Pedro & DJ Gorky went on the hunt for a new for a new female singer/MC who they said needed to be “the right side of crazy” to join them. Approaching MTV Brazil for help, the duo screened over 100 “Bonde Wannabees” and eventually whittled them down to two – Laura & Ana who would have to spend a week living with the Bonde Boys in Gorky’s garage carrying out daft tasks like mud wrestling and intensive karaoke sessions. Still unable to make up their minds by the end of the week, they decided to bring both girls on board the team as the new stars.

The new Bonde Do Role swing into action with a busy North American tour starting on 24 April in Miami and are expected to be in Europe mid-late Summer.

How the reformed group will go down remains to be seen. Some are already saying that they look too polished & have lost the wild, rough & ready edge that Marina used to bring.
