Lake of Stars 2007

Since 2004, autumn in Malawi has seen the Lake of Stars Festival take place on the palm fringed shores of Africa’s third largest lake: Lake Malawi. The festival raises money for charity, promotes Malawian music and provides travellers and Malawians alike with the opportunity to enjoy fantastic live music in an exotic and beautiful location. International and African artists share the stage at Chintheche Inn. So far artists such as Groove Armada’s Andy Cato, Felix B (Basement Jaxx), Yewande (US), the Chibuku DJs and Bugz in the Attic’s Mikey General have all journeyed out to the warm heart of Africa to perform. Joining them have been some of the biggest names in Malawian music – Tikhu Vibrations, Wambali, the Black Missionaries, and Joseph Tembo to name a few. Performances range from African jazz and gospel groups to beatboxers, circus performers, and DJs.

As well as the festival, Lake of Stars stages parties all over the world to help fund the festival and raise awareness of the event and of Malawi. Regular gigs take place in London and Liverpool and there are events in Europe and Africa planned for 2007.

Whats the deal with the burst tire (#64)? Did you have to change that in the middle of nowhere? We need stories!!

Yup pretty much. they had the worst car jack ever too and not only that, they didn't have a clue where to put it. so much so that, the first two times they jacked it up, the jack slipped out and the bus came crashing back down. At one point the 8 of us had to push on one side of the bus so that we could get it up high enough to take off the damaged tyre. It was also pitch dark the entire time so we were doing it all with a dodgy torch. I think if the torch had have run out we were f***ed. To cap it all off Lisa fell into a really deep hole when she was helping out and hurt her leg. Finally after getting back on the road, delayed because of the blown tyre, because they went the long way round at first and because the minibus did no more than 45mph we arrived in Lilonge about 3 hours late and then they decided to tell us that they had absolutely no idea where we were staying! It was a trying time for all concerned. Lucky enough we had dorito sandwiches to see us through the hard times :)
